Antique Metal-Clad Door · Rajasthan, India
This antique door was sourced in Rajasthan and features a traditional metal-clad construction—thick iron sheeting wrapped over a hand-hewn wooden core and secured with rows of forged iron studs. These doors were built for durability, and the weight, patina, and craftsmanship speak to decades of use in a Rajasthan haveli or courtyard compound.
The vertical central spine is carved from solid wood, softened from age and wear, with original hand-forged hardware still intact. The large iron latch, decorative strapwork, and domed rivets show the irregularities and hammer marks typical of pre-industrial metalwork. Over time, the metal cladding has developed a deep, mottled finish—a mix of darkened oxidation, subtle texture, and polished edges from generations of handling.
Recently stripped and cleaned, the door retains its original character without the heavy overpainting found on some salvaged Indian architectural pieces. It’s a dramatic architectural element, but also works beautifully as a statement art piece hung vertically or leaned against a wall.
