Ox Cart Bench

Constructed from components of an antique bull cart from northwestern India, this extraordinary bench carries the rugged engineering and sculptural presence of its original utilitarian form. The dramatically pitched backrest, layered slatted construction, exposed joinery, and dark weathered patina transform the piece into something that feels equally architectural, primitive, and deeply modern.
Originally part of a working agricultural cart, the bench retains the evidence of decades of use — worn wood surfaces, hand-forged hardware, old repairs, and irregular construction details that speak to its handmade origins. The vertical rhythm of the narrow wood slats and the strong geometric silhouette give the piece remarkable visual tension and presence.
At 58 inches wide, 28 inches deep, and 61 inches high, the bench functions almost as a sculptural installation within a space. The unusually tall back creates a commanding profile that anchors a room while still feeling tactile and authentic rather than ornamental.
The piece works especially well:
- In collected organic modern interiors
- Within wabi-sabi or Belgian-inspired spaces
- In loft environments with layered architectural elements
- As a dramatic entry hall statement piece
- In hospitality or retail environments seeking authentic focal objects
The dark aged finish, visible wear, oxidation, cracks, and irregularities are not flaws but essential parts of the object’s history and integrity. No attempt has been made to overly restore or sanitize the piece.
More than seating, the bench reads as a functional architectural artifact — sculptural, storied, and impossible to authentically reproduce.
